Westport Historical Society hosts family-friendly NYE celebration

WESTPORT -

The Westport Historical Society is credited with inaugurating a new celebration for residents looking to ring in the new year with their families.

The historical society gathered the resources to host the first First Light Festival after the town's traditional First Night Celebration was canceled due to a lack of funding.

Families were invited to participate in both indoor and outdoor activities, including games, arts and crafts, carriage rides, colorful makeup and live performances.

The Westport Historical Society staff didn't know if they'd be able to have an event, but eventually families rallied to ensure an event was planned.

Parents were happy to have an event that kept children entertained as they planned their own evenings.

"It's nice to have an activity to kind of tire them out and get in bed before midnight so we can salvage the night for grown-ups," said Ewa Abrams of Westport.

Westport firefighters were also on-site to make sure everyone stayed safe.
