Stamford Police Chief John Fontneau announced he will retire after a 38-year career with the department.
Fonteneau was appointed chief in 2012, and is one of the longest serving chiefs in the city's history.
He's received national honors for community relations and policing programs.
The mayor's office says a hiring committee will be formed to conduct a nationwide search for a successor.
Fonteneau is expected to retire in the spring.
