New Canaan musician creates ‘gig box’ rhythmical invention

Posted: Updated:
NEW CANAAN -

A New Canaan musician hopes his rhythmical invention will be a hit.

Mark Pires says his "gig box" sounds just like a drum kit - complete with snares - but musicians can sit on it and play it with their feet while their hands are busy with a guitar.

Pires says the spark for the drum was lit when a drummer missed a show and he decided to think up a way to make performing solo simpler.

Pires says he's been working on it for seven years and has a patent. Now it’s being sold in stores, including one right in New Canaan – New Canaan Music.

"I feel like when people see it, they will say 'Yeah. I want one in my collection.' They all sound different...they all have their own unique omnitone," he says.

Pires says he can't wait to see a professional musician using his invention.
