Suffolk PD: Smithtown SD teacher rear-ended police cruiser, charged with DWI

Police say a Medford man who's a sixth-grade teacher in the Smithtown Central School District was charged with DWI after slamming his pickup truck into a Suffolk County police cruiser.
Investigators say 43-year-old Brian Eddington was driving on the northbound side of Nicolls Road in Holtsville around 9 p.m. Thursday when he slammed into the cruiser.
Officials say the cruiser was pulled onto the side of the road and had its lights flashing. The officer inside was responding to a previous crash at that location. The officer was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
Eddington refused to comment while leaving Central Islip court Friday. He had his driver's license suspended and was released without bail.
Medford neighbors called Eddington a devoted family man.
The Smithtown School District confirmed that Eddington works as a science teacher at Nesaquake Middle School in St. James. Eddington's defense attorney says he's been with the district for more than a decade.
The district says Eddington has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
