A Boerum Hill wedding dress designer says she gets most of her inspiration from the diversity of Brooklyn.
Yvonne Chu has been designing custom wedding dresses and other clothes for 19 years. Her specialty is bridal wear. She believes customers come to her for the intimate, unique experience that her Boerum Hill studio, Kimera, has to offer.
Kimera offers wedding dresses in a variety of colors, including red, blue or black.
"It's the diversity of Brooklyn that I think feeds my creativity so I obviously have some... Chinese elements and other Asian elements but more recently I've started using African wax prints, and I always have used a lot of Indian sarees," says Chu.
Chu says all the production for the designs are done in house, which allows her to cut the cost.
"I think you should not have to pay thousands of dollars to have a beautiful dress," she says.
Chu says the best part of her job is seeing her customer's smile on their wedding day.
