Fight erupts outside court ahead of murder suspect's arraignment

City police and state troopers were called to the scene of a fight Monday outside a Bridgeport courthouse where Jayvell Washington was set to be arraigned.
Police were forced to close down Golden Hill Street when they responded to reports of a fight. Washington was due to appear in court on a murder charge after police say he killed Eugene Rogers Jr. outside the Citgo gas station on Reservoir Avenue on Sunday.
Police say Rogers, 50, was shot multiple times, including in the head. A gun was recovered at the scene and police say they arrested Washington, 39, a few hours after the shooting.
"It's unfortunate, any loss of life," says Police Chief AJ Perez. "Especially for Eugene's mother, this is the third son she has lost. My heart goes out to her."
Rogers' family members say they were attacked outside the court by Washington's family.
The courthouse was closed down for some time as a result. Anyone who didn't have a court appearance wasn't allowed in.
"I think that's disgusting because I wanted to see the person that killed my son be arraigned today," says Rogers. "It's not going to go away, he's going to be arraigned and I wanted to see it. He killed my son."
Washington is scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 13.
