FAIRFIELD -

A man is accused of bringing a child along while he committed an armed robbery at a rest stop off the Merritt Parkway, police say.

The incident happened Thursday inside the southbound Exit 46 rest area off of the Merritt Parkway around 8 p.m.

Police say the suspect, who is described as a black male wearing a mask, sweatpants, a black-colored sweatshirt and red-colored sneakers, entered the back of the store before displaying a black-colored pistol.

They say the man entered the store and the child waited at the door for him during the robbery.

State police say the man robbed both the Dunkin' Donuts and the Alltown convenience store located inside the rest stop.

A similar armed robbery where a man brought a child into a store also occurred in Bridgeport last week and state police say they looking into a possible connection.

Police say no one was hurt and the suspect got away with around $1,000.

The man and child left in a car and headed down Congress Street.

Police have released surveillance images of both the suspect and the child.
