An East End woman says she learned to read the fine print the hard way after getting caught in what she calls a subscription trap.
Jeannine Conte, of Remsenberg, says she saw an advertisement on Pinterest last year for a free trial of Radiant Revive face cream -- all she had to do was pay a couple bucks for shipping. But filling out that form, she says, ended up costing her a lot of money.
Consumer experts call it the free trial subscription trap. The Better Business Bureau and the Federal Trade Commission say it’s a growing problem online, especially with beauty and diet products. Companies offer a free trial, but in many cases it's actually a subscription.
Conte says she didn't see the fine print on the Radient Revive site that said if you don't cancel in a couple of weeks, you'll be charged for more shipped products.
The BBB has hundreds of complaints about Radiant Revive, which it gave its lowest rating of "F."
News 12 requested comment from the North Carolina-based Radiant Revive but did not immediately hear back.
Conte says she eventually got a full refund after lots of back and forth with the company.
