Pop-up pantry spot in Bridgeport offers fresh food, free checkup

People lined up from across Bridgeport Saturday to receive fresh food from the Connecticut Food Bank, as well as a wellness checkup.
The food bank partnered with the Fred Weisman Americares Free Clinic of Bridgeport to bring a truck filled with 10,000 pounds of only the freshest food.
Inside the clinic, people received free medical care.
"Our target population are those low-income, uninsured people who fall through the cracks of the traditional health care system," says Karen Gottlieb, of Americares.
Alan Feldman, of the Connecticut Food Bank, says the fresh food provided to the public will help prevent diabetics from ending up hospitalized.
“If we can provide healthy food for them and keep them from getting into a diabetic crisis and keep them out of the hospital, that just makes more sense," says Feldman.
The food bank and clinic will be at 115 Highland Ave. on the second Saturday of every month.
