Teen center director: It’s important to discuss suicide with kids

DARIEN -

A teen center in Darien is offering advice to parents following the recent suicide of a teen in Danbury.

Research shows that more teens than ever are being diagnosed with depression.  According to one study, the rate among children 12-17 has increased more than 60 percent in more than three years.

Janice Marzano, the program director of the Depot in Darien, tells News 12 that the number of teens who get referrals to counseling has spiked over the past two decades, and that the cellphone culture and social media have definitely exacerbated the problem.

She adds the nation’s oldest teen center is more important than ever because it gives kids a safe space away from school.

Marzano says the crucial thing is that adults in any community let young people know they are there and ready to listen.

“My opinion is, you bring it up, and you say...why do you think she was that sad?  Do you see people like that in school, are any of your friends that depressed? Do you see this on Facebook? On Instagram?” she says.

Marzano adds even though it may feel uncomfortable, it is important for parents to discuss suicide with their kids.
