FAIRFIELD -

Firefighters saved five dogs from a burning house on Saturday.

By the time crews arrived at the Stratfield Road residence, fire had engulfed the back and side of the home. The people in the house had escaped safely, but firefighters found three dogs on the second floor and two in the basement. Two of the dogs on the second floor suffered from smoke inhalation.

The fire spread inside the house and garage as a neighboring home started to catch fire. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
