Stop & Shop union workers announced they have voted in favor of a strike after proposed wage cuts.

The United Food & Commercial Workers local 371 union made the announcement Thursday.

In a press release, the union wrote that the strike is a result of "drastic cuts to workers’ take home pay and benefits."

UFCW Local 371 President Tom Wilkinson wrote, "We hope that this decision will send a clear message that our union family is committed to making Stop & Shop a better place to work and shop. The cuts that Stop & Shop are proposing not only hurt workers, but will also affect the customer service and shopping experience our communities have come to know and appreciate."

Union 371 is made up primarily of meat cutters and deli workers.

The union says it is working with four other unions in New England, which represent a total of 30,000 workers.
