Fire destroys newly constructed $9M building project at Silver Sands State Park
A large fire destroyed a newly constructed building project at Silver Sands State Park in Milford.
The fire happened Tuesday at East Broadway and Silver Sands State Park around 10:30 p.m.
Officials say the fire destroyed a newly constructed concession stand and dining area as well as public restrooms.
A new office building was also damaged by the fire and officials say not much is salvageable.
Firefighters say the nearly completed units were going to open Memorial Day weekend.
All Milford firefighters responded to the fire and it was extinguished about 2-hours later.
The park has been undergoing a project to add three new buildings with bathrooms, changing rooms and a snack bar.
Former Gov. Dannel Malloy cut the ribbon on the $9 million project late last year.
Officials say the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection is monitoring the potential of toxins from the fire making their way into the Long Island Sound.
DEEP Commissioner Katie Dykes thanked the Milford Fire Department in a press release.  “DEEP is grateful for the efforts of the Milford Fire Department and other responding agencies. The park will remain closed for as long as necessary to investigate the fire and protect the safety of the public. Though we are saddened by the loss of the buildings under construction, the most important thing is that no one was injured fighting the fire,” Dykes says.
No one was injured and the fire remains under investigation, officials say.
Officials say they are not yet ruling out arson as a cause of the fire.
