American Red Cross in Greenwich donates supplies to wounded veterans
The American Red Cross in Greenwich hosted colleagues from the tristate area for a service project to help the men and women in the military.
Board members from the Metro New York North chapter helped prepare care packages called "Medevac" bags for patients arriving at Walter Reed Medical Center in suburban Washington, D.C.
The bags are filled with toiletries, snacks and other items designed to ease the transition for wounded vets.
Mary Young, CEO of the American Red Cross at Metro NY North, says volunteers are critical to their efforts.
"Our volunteers down there make them a handmade quilt and it’s just incredible, the volunteers also prepare adaptive clothing for them when they arrive down there and if they come in and they're amputees and we know upon arrival that they may be missing an arm or a leg, we have clothing prepared for them when they arrive."
The Metro New York North chapter alone is responsible for supplying about one third of all the medevac bags used at the hospital every year.
