WESTPORT -

One person was killed in a fiery, early morning car crash in Westport.

The crash happened on Weston Road just before 1 a.m. Sunday.

Officers were called to the scene of what they thought was a large fire. They arrived to find the car fully engulfed in flames.

The car had struck a utility pole and brought down power lines.

Firefighters worked through the night to extinguish the fire.

Neighbors say accidents in the area are not uncommon.

The road was closed between Sipperley's Hill Road and Silver Brook Road, and drivers were told to expect delays in the area as the Westport Police Department Accident Investigation Team and detective bureau worked to determine a cause. Utility crews were also on scene to restore the pole and wires.

The victim has not yet been identified.
