Police: Man smashes delivery driver in head with rock

Montclair police say that a 65-year-old food delivery driver was assaulted by a man he found rummaging around inside his car.
The assault happened April 12 around 8 p.m. near Lackawanna Plaza. Police say that the driver found that the attacker had broken a window to his car and was rummaging around. When the driver confronted the man, he punched the driver and struck him in the head multiple times with a rock.
The attacker then stole the driver’s wallet and ran away.
The driver was taken to Mountainside Hospital for treatment and is expected to be OK.
The driver was not identified and it was not clear for which restaurant he was working for. Owners of other food businesses in the area say that they are shocked by assault.
Jon Latona, owner of nearby Panzano Pizzeria, says that he always tells his delivery drivers to stay aware of their surroundings.
“We tell them to be cautious and always be careful,” he says. “If you feel that something’s not right, drive away and call the store…and let us call the customer.”
Police described the attacker as a light-skinned black man in his 40s. He is about 5 feet, 6 inches tall and thin. He was wearing all black and possibly had a blue gym bag type of backpack.
Anyone who may have information about the assault is urged to call Montclair police at 973-744-1234.
