Faith-based rehab program uses song to help addiction recovery

Posted: Updated:
BRIDGEPORT -

A Bridgeport rehab program is helping men struggling with addiction get sober and sing along the way.

Most of the men never thought they would be singers and most of them never thought they would live this long.

Darryl Smith is a recovering addict.

"I know where I came from and it was horrible," says Smith. "I know it wouldn't be a bunch of singing and all that."

Smith turned to Pivot Ministries, a faith-based rehab program in Bridgeport that requires everyone to be in their choir ... even those who say they can't sing.

The three-step recovery program is nine to 12 months long. The singing is just a small part of it. It helps them share their story of recovery.

The Pivot Ministries Choir has become so popular, it is totally booked for this year and is already filling in dates for next year.

More than 2,000 men have graduated from the program since it was founded in 1970.
