A spokesperson for a Darien financial advisor charged with manslaughter in the death of an Anguillian hotel worker says the employee attacked him inside his hotel room during a family vacation.
A spokesperson for Gavin Scott Hapgood told News 12 in a statement he was defending himself. In a statement, the spokesperson says, Hapgood was “Attacked without warning in his family’s hotel room by a maintenance worker who was armed and demanding money, Scott Hapgood acted in self-defense to protect the lives of his young daughters and himself. Despite false reports to the contrary, the Hapgoods’ never called maintenance. Neither invited nor expected, the worker showed up unannounced in uniform at the hotel room, claiming he was there to fix a broken sink before carrying out his sudden, violent attack on the family. A dedicated father and husband and respected member of his community, Scott and the members of his family have been traumatized by the assault they survived and are thankful to be alive.”
Anguillian police spokesman Randy Dick told News 12 that the two young daughters of Hapgood were in the room at the Malliouhana Hotel when 27-year-old worker Kenny Mitchell was killed on April 13.
Hapgood was arrested and charged with manslaughter, Dick says.
He was taken to court, initially but denied bail.

Later that day, Hapgood's attorney filed an application to the high court and a cash bond was set at  $74,000.
Dick says the Connecticut resident is expected to return for an Aug. 22 hearing.
