Firefighters of the Westport Fire Department are rallying behind 13-year veteran Turk Aksoy, 46, who was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer five years ago and originally given three years to live.
In December of last year, Aksoy’s aggressive treatments made it impossible for him to continue working. The following month, his wife died suddenly.
Firefighters from the department say Aksoy’s diagnosis and subsequent treatment have taken a toll on everyone. They say his diagnosis was a shock to a man who was the picture of health.
A GoFundMe page has raised over $18,000 to support Aksoy and his two children, Tess and Tyson.
There is a fundraiser for Aksoy on Sunday, May 19 from 1-5 p.m. at Partners Cafe in Norwalk.
