Fire marshal probes cause of structure fire in South End abandoned building

STAMFORD -

An intersection at the corner of Dock and Atlantic streets was shut down Monday due to a structure fire in an abandoned building.

Stamford fire officials say the building caught fire around 11:15 a.m. They say the situation could have been a lot worse if not for a police officer working a traffic detail nearby who noticed the smoke from the fire and contacted dispatch.

According to officials, the fire did not go into any other buildings and no one was hurt in the fire.

Police say they are now questioning a man leaving the building who they arrested for trespassing, though at this time they are unable to determine if the man caused the fire.

The Fire Marshal’s Office says it is looking into how the flames started. Officials told News 12 abandoned buildings are at a higher risk for fires.
