Seniors and disabled residents at a Bridgeport housing complex say they've been stranded in their apartments for weeks due to a broken elevator.
James Freeman, 58, is a paraplegic who lives on the fifth floor of the building at 144 Golden St. says enough is enough.
"I cannot go to the doctor, I can't go out when I want to," says Freeman.
Freeman says he is one of many disabled residents in the building whose lives have been affected since the building's only elevator stopped working three weeks ago.
Freeman's attorney Peter Dreyer says he has reported the situation to everybody from the property manager to the fire marshal, but nothing has been done.
"This is a tragedy waiting to happen if somebody doesn't intervene," says Dreyer.
News 12 contacted Sen. Richard Blumenthal yesterday, who reached out to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Blumenthal says the property owner accepts funding from HUD, and will have to answer for the broken elevator.
"I am going to make sure that everything is done, in light of this federal funding, to ensure that these property owners and management honor their obligation," says Blumenthal.
An elevator repair crew showed up to the building Thursday afternoon, less than 24 hours after Blumenthal filed a complaint with HUD. He says on behalf of Freeman and the building's residents, he will make certain the elevator gets fixed.
Crestwood Management Group, which runs the building, did not respond to News 12's request for comment.
