Businesses are no longer allowed to distribute disposable plastic bags.
City officials say they are encouraging businesses to offer plastic bag alternatives, and for residents to utilize reusable bags made of cloth, fiber or fabric.
There will also be a 10-cent charge per bag for disposable paper bags. First-time violators will be given a warning, but other violations could result in a $250 fine.
