Stamford man who killed wife, abandoned child gets 25 years

Posted: Updated:
STAMFORD -

A Stamford man will spend 25 years in prison for killing his estranged wife and abandoning their 6-year-old daughter in New York City while he went on the run.

Elmer Gomez Ruano, who pleaded guilty, was sentenced Tuesday at the Stamford Courthouse. He spoke through a translator, telling the court: "I would like to apologize, and I'm very remorseful for what happened. At no time did I want things to go the way they did."

Gomez Ruano confessed that he used a wet towel to suffocate his wife, Dionicia Bautista-Cano, while their daughter was sleeping. It happened in their Glenbrook apartment in November 2016.

The same weekend, Bautista-Cano and the child moved from New Jersey to Stamford.

Police say Gomez Ruano killed his wife because he was jealous of her feelings for her ex-boyfriend. After the crime, he woke up their 6-year-old and abandoned her at the Port Authority Bus Terminal while he went on the run. Police there found the girl wandering around, and she led them back to Stamford where they discovered her mother dead.

Gomez Ruano's attorney called it a tragic situation. He says his client has given up all parental rights and that the child is now up for adoption.
