Police say a man who scammed a Lawrence senior out of nearly $300,000 remains at large.

Police say the scammer told the man he was from the Social Security Administration and that there was fraudulent activity under his name. They say the scammer then told the man to transfer money into multiple overseas accounts. The man complied.

Nassau Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder says they're working to identify those accounts and recover the money.

Bernard Macias, of AARP, says someone's identity is stolen roughly every two seconds. He says the Lawrence victim is among the larger cases of which he's heard. He cautions that anyone demanding money or making threats of arrest over the phone or through email should be questioned.

Police and advocates for the elderly say family members should have frank talks with aging relatives about protecting themselves against possible scams.
