Officials are calling a fire at a Bridgeport restaurant suspicious.

Witnesses say they saw smoke coming out of the roof of the brick oven pizza restaurant on Capitol Avenue early Monday morning.

The 911 call came in at 7:30 a.m., and 32 firefighters worked to contain the blaze.

The business was closed for Memorial Day, but firefighters say that when they arrived on scene, they found the back door of the restaurant open.

“The first unit on scene did report that the rear door to the building was open, so that leads us to believe that there's some type of suspicious activity going on,” says Bridgeport Fire Deputy Chief Lance Edward.

Fire officials say most of the damage is in the basement.

The owner of the pizzeria tells News 12 that he opened the restaurant 10 years ago and says it's been broken into three times already.

The owner says he would like to reopen as soon as possible.
