Police are working with the fire marshal's office to see if two fires at Bridgeport businesses over the weekend are connected.
Wood's Mart Variety has been boarded up after a fire ripped through the store Sunday night. Investigators have ruled the fire as arson.
The owner of Wood's Mart Variety, Jamal Ahid, says he was at his computer when two men came in, he assumed to do some shopping. Instead, he says they poured gas inside the store and lit it on fire.
No one was hurt. Ahid says he does not know when the business will be back open. He also says he has no idea who set the fire.
Firefighters were back in the area Monday morning for flames at Brick Oven Pizza on the corner of Capitol and Wood avenues, less than half a mile down the street from Wood's Mart Variety.
A nearby business owner was the one who noticed smoke coming from the restaurant's roof around 7:15 a.m.
Fire officials say wood that was stored in the basement caught fire and it may not have been an accident. The back door to the restaurant was found open, which led investigators to call the fire suspicious.
Anyone with information on either fire is asked to contact the police department at (203) 581-5201 or fire marshal's office at (203) 576-8013.
