Stamford, surrounding area prepare for I-95 construction nightmare

Posted: Updated:
STAMFORD -

Towns along the I-95 corridor are preparing for a potential traffic nightmare this weekend as crews begin a bridge replacement project in Stamford.

For several weeks, police and the Department of Transportation have been warning people about the I-95 closure at Exit 9 in Stamford going in both directions.

The project is so big that surrounding towns like Darien have been involved since the beginning.

"We do expect extremely heavy delays and we want to make sure we can get emergency services through," says Darien Police Capt. Donald Anderson.

The project will begin Friday at 11 p.m. and continue through Monday at 5 a.m. Commuters will have to get off the highway so crews can replace the aging Route 1 Bridge.

Anderson says signage extending back all the way into Massachusetts and Rhode Island is asking people to avoid the area.

Despite the chaos, Stamford business Roost, which sits near the construction, isn't too concerned.

"We have so many local customers come in, like really walking distance away, that I'm not overly concerned about an effect from the closure," says Roost manager Mitchell Ryan.

The same location will be closed next weekend as well to allow crews to complete the project.
