A state trooper who was injured while responding to a call on I-95 Sunday was released from Bridgeport Hospital Tuesday.
State Trooper Gregory Sawicki was hurt while trying to assist the driver of a disabled vehicle on I-95 northbound near Exit 22. Sawicki was pulled over onto the shoulder of I-95 in Fairfield.
Police say that's when a Chevy Tahoe driven by Joseph Buzzanca, 32, of Trumball, veered out of the left land and hit Sawicki's cruiser. The impact pushed Sawicki into the disabled vehicle. All three drivers had to be extracted from their vehicles.
Police say the state's Move Over Law is meant to protect first responders.
"Unfortunately we've had troopers that have lost their lives, that have been rear-ended in a very similar fashion," says Lt. Col. David Montini. "Trooper First Class Kenneth Hall was killed several years ago. And it's very sad when these things happen. They're very unfortunate, they can be avoided, and we hope that the public can adhere to that Move Over Law. It's very important."
Sawicki was given a police escort to his home.
