Tops Diner in Newark to get major overhaul, close for weeks

The Tops Diner in East Newark, once named the best in America, is getting an overhaul that will require the restaurant to close up to six weeks.
The diner will triple in square footage, increase its parking lot by 35 spaces, and hire 18 more employees. Their seating capacity will increase from 180 seats to 296. An outdoor seating area will also be added for people to eat outside.
But the restaurant will be closed for four to six weeks before the new facility is good to go.
The diner will remain in the same spot on Passaic Avenue.
The cost and start date of construction are unknown at this time.
