An Oakdale man is receiving backlash for a sign on his front lawn in support of President Donald Trump.
The sign in front of Alan Herrick's home reads, "Good job Trump. Build that wall. Trump 2020."
"There were eggs thrown at it, there were some bottles. I found broken glass, empty beer cans," the 75-year-old said.
The sign is a little more than 10 feet tall. Herrick told News 12 he put the sign up in the winter. He has since added things to it including, no collusion "cry babies" and a toilet seat with the words "fake news" on it.
"He's done a pretty good job," Herrick said. "He shoots his mouth off a few times -- that I wish he'd keep it closed -- but hey, that's what got him there though."
Herrick says that while he gets some negative letters, most of the reaction to the sign is positive. He lives across from Oakdale Bohemia Middle School and says some people drive by and shout words of support while others shout obscenities.
"Whether you agree or not, I think it's just free speech," Oakdale resident John Sciarrino said.
An Islip Town spokeswoman told News 12 the two complaints they received were investigated by code enforcement. She says because the sign is on Herrick's private property and not town land, he does not need a permit and it does not have to come down.
