CDC issues warning about feeding pig ears to dogs
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is warning pet owners to not feed pig ears to their dogs because they could be infected with salmonella.
The FDA and CDC say not to touch pig ears or feed them to dogs. They say both the animal and human can get sick from simply touching the treats or caring for a dog that has eaten one.
According to the CDC, a total of 127 people in 33 states have been infected with the outbreak strains of salmonella. Twenty-six people have been hospitalized, and 24 of the illnesses have been in children younger than 5.
Symptoms of salmonella include diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps. The symptoms can appear 12 to 72 hours after being exposed to the bacteria.
Pet owners that have bags of pig ears at home are urged to discard them.
