Orange Firemen's Carnival crucial to raising money for volunteer department

ORANGE -

The Orange Firemen's Carnival is underway with tens of thousands of people expected to hit the rides and enjoy food this weekend.

People have been flocking to the Orange Firemen's Carnival for nearly 100 years to help support the fire department's volunteer firefighters.

Don Foyer, chairman of the carnival, says the money brought in will help the fire department respond to the approximately 500 calls it gets a year.

"We are a unique department in that we fund ourselves," says Foyer. "We buy our own apparatus, we buy our own gear, and we do our own training."

Foyer says the department also gets a small stipend from the town and raises money through boot drives, but the carnival is the bulk of its revenue. He says the department just bought an $850,000 ladder truck.

The carnival runs through Sunday.
