The Stamford Public Education Foundation is helping kids entering kindergarten with a six-week preschool program.
Nearly 300 incoming kindergarteners in Stamford have not had the opportunity to attend preschool, according to organizers.
Students participating in the program began learning Thursday inside classrooms at Hart Magnet Elementary School in Stamford.
Organizer Matthew Quinones says the Summer Start program will help to make sure kids hit the ground running on their first day of kindergarten.
"The program really focuses on math and literacy, but has a social emotional component as well," Quinones says.
After students finish the six-week program they will receive backpacks filled with school supplies and more.
