Video from Bridgeport shows a woman's dog being attacked by a loose pit bull in her neighborhood.
The incident happened on Bretton Street near Melbourne Street.
Rose Delia has lived in the neighborhood for about 15 years. She says she's never seen the pit bull in the area until Monday morning when it nearly killed her 11-year-old Chihuahua-Pomeranian mix.
The video shows Delia's dog, Coco, on the deck in the back of her house when an unknown, off-leash pit bull runs from the street to the deck to attack her. Delia says she heard Coco's cries from inside the house and called her brother for help. Her brother used a broom to get the pit bull away from Coco, and it ran off.
Delia says, "Coco was literally bleeding all over; he had taken a huge chunk off her back."
The 8-pound dog was rushed to the vet and stayed there for two days. She needed 39 stitches. Coco always spends the summer mornings on the deck, Delia says, and she’s never had an issue before this attack.
Coco is back home, but her prognosis is uncertain. Her owners say she is usually very feisty and active but that she hasn’t been the same since the incident. “She’s in so much pain,” Delia says. “I feel like every single day I look at her, every time I go to work, I have to say my goodbyes.”
Delia reported the attack to Bridgeport Animal Control but so far there have been no leads. Delia says she hopes by speaking out, the owner will come forward and prevent a similar incident from happening again.
Delia says two other neighbors also reported being chased by an unknown, similar-looking dog this past week. She says she's especially worried because Blackham School is down the street and kids will start going there next week.
