With the first day of school only a few days away, more than 1,000 students and parents showed up for free backpacks and school supplies in Bridgeport.
There was also free scheduling for physicals and check-ups for children, cotton candy and face painting.
The day’s events were provided by the city and nonprofit groups, such as United Way of Coastal Fairfield County.
For Nivea De Los Santos and her two sons, Ezequiel and Charlie, the long lines were simply part of the excitement.
"I think this is awesome, an awesome opportunity for parents that don't have the money to get their kids backpacks,” she told News 12.
