Bridgeport mom: School bus did not accommodate son with autism

A Bridgeport mom says her special-needs child was forced to stay home on the first day of school because school officials never got back to her about accommodating her son.
Gina Colon and her 7-year-old son Zaiden, who has autism and is non-verbal, was left home on the first day of school because his bus never came to pick him up.
Colon is a single mom and leaves for her job as an EMT early in the morning. She needs Zaiden to be picked up and dropped off from a babysitter's house.
"It's very, very stressful, sometimes overwhelming," she said. "Not having the support that I need is difficult, but I mean he's the one who keeps me going. I wake up every day and just remember that I have to do it for him."
She applied back in June to have the school bus pick up Zaiden from his babysitter's house, citing special circumstances related to her son's disability. However, she says no one from the school ever got back to her about the request, forcing her to stay home with him.
"My son is missing his first day of school when everyone else's children are in school, and it's something that I've been trying to deal with since June last year," Colon said. "So that's what makes it even more frustrating."
City officials immediately intervened and fixed the problem when News 12 Connecticut reported the situation.
"I am so glad you brought this case to our attention and we were able to come up with a solution that works for this family," said Mayor Joe Ganim, "because every family is important."
