A Bridgeport grandmother is speaking out publicly for the first time after her 4-year-old grandson fell from a third-story window.
Tina Williams is calling the Labor Day incident an honest mistake. Her 4-year-old grandson Alexander is recovering from facial injuries at Yale New Haven Hospital but will be released soon.
Williams says the child’s 14-year-old brother, who was watching him, fell asleep. She says their 11-year-old brother, who has autism, then opened a window that is typically locked. Alexander was then able to climb on the couch and fall out the Stratford Avenue apartment window. His mom rushed downstairs as onlookers called 911.
Williams says some people have condemned her, saying it was her fault that the child was able to climb up onto a couch and fall out of an open window. But the grandmother says it could have happened to anybody.
Williams says the Department of Children and Families is concerned about the child returning to the apartment, so she's trying to find more suitable housing for her daughter and grandchildren on a lower level.
"I mean I can't just sit and watch them take her kids because of a mistake,” says Williams.
DCF wouldn't comment, but ABCD Executive Director Monette Ferguson said, "I don't know the details of the investigation into the child's fall, but I can tell you the child's mom is an ABCD employee who has earned the respect and admiration of everyone here.  I hope when her son is better he can go home and complete his recovery in a familiar environment.  Childhood accidents happen and do not necessarily reflect fault on the part of the families."
