A couple accused of a string of burglaries in New Canaan are also tied to a potential child abuse case in Milford, according to police.

New Canaan police say five residential burglaries occurred in the same neighborhood last month in northern New Canaan.

Daniel Perez and Alessandra Sillo were arrested and accused of breaking into homes on Mariomi, Hickok and Fox Run roads. In each case, a rock or brick was used to break a window above a doorknob, according to police.

Arrest warrants show officers discovered stolen handbags and paintings inside the couple's home in Shelton.

It's not the first time the couple has become the focus of a police investigation. When they were living in Milford in May, police there began looking into them after a disturbing online video suggested physical abuse to their children. They say Perez could be heard hitting and yelling at his two crying kids in the video.

When police went to the home, they found what they called "deplorable living conditions," including no running water, nails sticking up through floorboard, and food and garbage strewn everywhere.

They also noted possible burn marks on one of the children.

Both parents were charged with risk of injury. Perez was also charged with threatening. The Health Department condemned the home, and the kids were placed in foster care. That case is still going through the court system.

It's also possible more burglary charges could be filed. New Canaan police say some of the stolen items they recovered were connected to burglaries in other places, including Norwalk.
