Sources: Gang member stabbed 5 times inside Nassau County Jail

Posted: Updated:

Two suspected MS-13 gang members stabbed a suspected Salvadorans With Pride gang member inside Nassau County Jail earlier this week, according to News 12 sources.

The victim, identified as Luis Aguilar, was stabbed five times and has a punctured lung. He is expected to survive.

Nassau Correction Officers Benevolent Association president Brian Sullivan says the jail has had an issue with smuggled weapons. He says they need more metal detectors and more officers in their gang intelligence unit.

“We have a weapons problem in our jail,” Sullivan told News 12. “We don't do enough preliminary searches to try to get the weapons out. We just don't have enough capability here and these ranks need to be refilled.”

Sullivan says the county included $200,000 in its budget for a more sophisticated TSA-style metal detector, but that it has still not been purchased.

In a statement, the Nassau County Sheriff's Office says, "The Department of Health regulations governing the type and use of such devices in jails were just approved earlier this year. The department is in the process of exploring the purchase and safe use (both for staff and inmates) of such equipment."

The Sheriff’s Office also says that “identified gang member population has remained relatively stable over the past 18 months. All our correction officers receive training on gangs and gang activity in the jail.”

As for staffing levels, Nassau County Executive Laura Curran says 40 new correction officers were hired last year, “which was the most hired in a decade.”

She also says 25 more officers were hired a few weeks ago, and 25 others have since graduated.
