A report on the investigation of sexual abuse in the Diocese of Bridgeport shows 281 people, mostly minors, were allegedly sexually abused.
The report, done in conjunction with the law firm of Pullman & Comley shows 71 priests since 1953 have been accused of sexual abuse.
Bishop Frank Caggiano called for the report to be completed about a year ago, with former state Supreme Court Judge Robert Holzberg presenting it Tuesday.
Holzberg says 61% of the abuse reports accuse the same 10 clergy members. Much of the abuse reported was under former bishops Walter Curtis' and Edward Egans' administrations.
Curtis admitted to purging documents related to sexual abuse cases. During his administration, between 1961 and 1988, there were 217 alleged instances of abuse. The abuse ranges from kissing to violent sexual acts.
Over 50 witnesses, sexual abuse survivors, priests and bishops were interviewed for the report. There have been no claims of sexual abuse against minors in the archdiocese since 2008.
