Fairfield is bursting with pride thanks to a local man who won the Nobel Prize for Medicine.

Dr. William Kaelin moved from Long Island to Fairfield as a teenager. He says his dad wanted to find someplace near New York with good public schools

Now, Kaelin works at Dana-Farber Cancer Center in Massachusetts where he did his groundbreaking research on tumor growth and oxygen.

Kaelin credits his success to his teachers at what was then called Roger Ludlowe High School.

"I simply had a number of outstanding teachers at Roger Ludlowe High School," said Kaelin.

For his longtime friend, Dominick Caiati, this honor is not much of a surprise.

"I always told him he was going to win the Nobel Prize for Medicine someday and he would look at me kind of weirdly. And I said 'No, you have this. You got what it takes and you are going to do this,'" said Caiati.
