Doctor reminds seniors importance of managing medications

A doctor at Bridgeport Hospital is reminding seniors of the importance of managing their medications.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says older adults are nearly seven times more likely to go to the emergency room than younger people when they take too many medications.
Dr. Leen Bakkali says seniors should use a pill organizer to manage their medications. She says to be careful of over-the-counter medications that interact with other medications.
"As we get older, our metabolism slows down. Our processing of the medications, our kidney function slows down. The distribution, the discretion of the medication is not the same, so it tends to stay longer in our system and we become more sensitive to it," said Bakkali.
Bakkali says it's always important to check with your doctor first before taking anything.
