Yonkers City Council to decide whether to use 'Christmas' in tree lighting ceremony

The Yonkers City Council is deciding what it should call its tree lighting event, which is just a week away.
The city hasn't included the word Christmas in front of the word tree in the name of its annual holiday lighting event for several years.
Councilmember Anthony Merante has moved for a resolution that would encourage all City of Yonkers agencies to include the individual nature of holiday celebrations in event names.
The new protocol isn't just for Christians -- Merante says it should be like that for all holidays.
While some may feel like the word Christmas alienates those who don't celebrate the holiday, more than a dozen people in the area said it shouldn't be a problem.
