Newtown celebrates state title 7 years after Sandy Hook tragedy

The incredible storybook ending to Newtown High School's football season is still the talk of the town days later.
No one in Newtown will ever forget the Sandy Hook shooting on Dec. 14, 2012. But seven years later, a determined group of young men gave the town something to cheer about on the somber anniversary.
Newtown won its first state title in 27 years on Saturday on a last-second, 36-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Riley Ward. The win completed a perfect season for the team.
"The fact that it happened to be on a difficult day for the community again, I think that hopefully for as long as they think about what they accomplished that day, it's really about what they accomplished on the field, and I hope that and I expect that's how it will be remembered," says Newtown First Selectman Dan Rosenthal.
The highlight made the rounds on social media over the week and made national headlines, with the team even appearing on NBC's "Football Night in America."
Connor Hughes, who played on last year's Newtown team, says he'll never forget the win.
"It's a tough day for our town, but that just brought so much light to the day," says Hughes.
