Nine months after a fire destroyed a renovation at Silver Sands State Park in Milford, officials are hoping to rebuild by Memorial Day.

Back in March of last year, a fire ripped through a nearly complete addition to the park that was due to hold a concessions stand, bathrooms, a changing area and lifeguard office.

The $9 million project was set to open for Memorial Day 2019. It didn't come without controversy though -- some residents voiced concerns about the cost, potential traffic and parking.

Rebuilding from the damage has been underway, but all of that work only recently became visible with the first building frame rising from the deck.

State Parks Director Tom Tyler says fire officials investigated and concluded the cause of the fire could not be determined because of the intensity of the flames. Now the focus is to move forward.

Tyler says the general contractor's insurance will pay for the rebuild. He's optimistic the new facilities will be ready for the unofficial kickoff of summer this year.

Weather could play a role in whether the addition is complete on time -- workers will be on the job through the winter unless it's incredibly cold or snowing.
