A 22-year-old man accused in a string of burglaries in Westbury was released under the new state bail law and hours later burglarized a Bagel Boss in Carle Place, police say.
Nassau Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder says Gerard Conway was arrested in connection with six commercial burglaries and released on New Year's Eve without having to post bail. Ryder says hours later on New Year's Day he committed another burglary.
"If he had stayed in the system, we would have not have had that other burglary," says Ryder.
Ryder says this is the second incident in the county since the new law went into effect.
As News 12 has reported, 20-year-old Maria Campione was released on New Year's Eve under the new law and the next day was arrested twice. Campione is accused of writing 'F Trump' on an Oceanside ATM and then breaking into the Hewlett Elementary School.
Democratic Sen. Todd Kaminsky says lawmakers may be interested in taking a second look at the law.
"As a former prosecutor I believe it is important that this session we, in consultation with law enforcement and local elected officials, assess how the bail reform legislation is impacting communities and take appropriate corrective measures where warranted," says Sen. Kaminsky.
The law was signed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo as part of the 2019 budget and opponents have said there was zero debate on the matter.
