Middlesex State's Attorney Michael A. Gailor will oversee the investigation into the officer-involved shooting of Mubarak Soulemane in West Haven.
Acting Chief State's Attorney John J. Russotto made the announcement Tuesday afternoon. He says the circumstances of the investigation have changed.
News 12 reported last week that video of the incident was shared by construction worker Eddie Pagan, who says he was working close to the scene when it happened.
The incident started on Main Avenue in Norwalk Wednesday, Jan. 15 outside of the Verizon Wireless store, where police say Soulemane, 19, used a knife to carjack a person inside of a white sedan.
State police pursued the suspect's car on I-95 and a chase began. The chase was caught on state traffic cameras, and showed the driver colliding with other vehicles before ending up in West Haven underneath Exit 43.
Police say the driver of the stolen car also intentionally struck officers’ cruisers. The vehicle was eventually stopped in traffic on Campbell Avenue in West Haven, about 30 miles away from where it was stolen.
State police say an altercation occurred with the suspect before officers opened fire on Soulemane. He was pronounced dead at Yale New Haven Hospital.
State's Attorney Michael L. Regan was initially overseeing the investigation.
