There are three options available for gender on driver licenses for some states starting Tuesday.
On the Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles’ new gender designation forms, residents can check male, female or nonbinary, which is denoted by “X.”
The DMV says it made the change because it wanted to be fair to everyone. Connecticut is one of 12 states that is taking part in the change.
On Twitter, Governor Ned Lamont said: "We have a responsibility as a state government to be inclusive across our customer experiences."

The Triangle Community Center in Norwalk, which represents clients in the LGBTQ community, says it has been pushing for this important change.
“This helps with applying for jobs, it's verification of their identity and it further supports them and gives them some sort of protection about who they are,” says the centers’ Sophie Gourgiotis.
Gourgiotis says the one concern is when people travel to other states that don't recognize the change.
The policy change also applies to learner's permits for new drivers.
