Caught on camera: Bridgeport woman who was hit by car calls on drivers to slow down

Posted: Updated:

A Bridgeport grandmother who was struck by a car earlier this month in an incident caught on video is urging the community to slow down on roadways.

Sonia Belardo, 57, was struck by a Chevy Trailblazer on Palisade Avenue on Jan. 6. The impact threw her 10 feet, leaving her unconscious. She broke both of her legs, multiple ribs and received a concussion during the incident.

Authorities say the driver, a neighbor, did stop and cooperate with police, but the case is still under investigation.

Belardo says she had a rod and pins placed in her ankle and femur and was hospitalized for 10 days.

"It's hard for me. I can't walk around. I can't go nowhere. I can't cook. I can't do nothing," she told News 12.

She says the driver had only limited insurance and she can't afford to buy the pain medication prescribed by her surgeon.

Belardo has set up a fund to help with medical expenses not covered by insurance.
