Police are searching for two young men who used a hammer to steal $80,000 worth of Rolex watches at a downtown Stamford department store.
Stamford police believe the suspects were prepared before carrying out the crime Thursday evening.
They say the two carried a hammer into Lord & Taylor on Highridge Road in a backpack and used it to smash the glass and take about a half-dozen watches. In a matter of minutes, the suspects fled in an SUV with orange New York license plates. The thieves left the hammer behind at the scene.
Sgt. Sean Scanlon says facial recognition technology from the store's surveillance video may help them name their suspects.
Police say the Rolex watches are traceable by serial number.

"Obviously you can sell watches to any unscrupulous person you want, but someone tries to sell them or service them at a reputable place, we'll know about it because Rolex will know about it," says Scanlon.
Police say no one was hurt.
